ARTS ALIVE!
Arts Alive is an after-school arts enrichment program that grew out of parents coming together with a shared interest in enhancing the arts at Happy Valley School. This volunteer-run program depends on your support.

Each session is 11 weeks and is held on Friday afternoons from 12:50 p.m. - 2:20 p.m.  Arts Alive is for grades 1 - 6 only.  The dates for the Spring 2020 session are Feb 7, 14, 21, 28, March 6, 13, 27, April 3, 17, 24, and May 1.
(No class on March 20 or April 10)

Classes are offered on a fee for service basis and efforts have been made to keep the fees as low as possible. Tuition is due at the time of registration, and placement in the program is not guaranteed until payment has been made.  Class placements are on a first come, first served basis when both the registration form and payment have been completed.  If you indicate a preference for a class that is full at the time of registering, your child will be placed on a waiting list for that class.  Please note that final class assignments are not made until after the registration period closes.  To make any changes after you have submitted your registration form, please contact the registration coordinator directly.

FREE TUITION FOR CLASS VOLUNTEERS
There will be one tuition-waived spot in selected classrooms available for any parent who commits to serving as an in-class aid (from 12:45-2:45 PM) for the duration of the 11-week course. In addition, you will need to provide pick-up supervision for that class.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are available to families in the free and reduced lunch program.  Reduced tuition cost is available for one student per family please.

PLAYGROUND AND SAFETY GUIDELINES
Our main objective is to create an inspiring and exciting environment where children engage with the arts in a more in-depth way than can be achieved during the school day.  To achieve this, the students involved must be committed to learning about art.  Please don’t use this program as mere childcare.  We must be able to provide a safe environment and this requires the full cooperation of every student enrolled in the Arts Alive program.  All school rules do apply during the Arts Alive Program.  If these rules are not followed, parents will be contacted and participation in the program will be jeopardized.

SPRING 2020 CLASSES

Dig It Garden Arts (Grades 1-6)
Dig it! kids will plant, harvest, cook (with the solar oven!) and enjoy the fall bounty of our amazing Happy Valley School garden. We’ll work with paint, cloth, yarn, bamboo, ceramic, rock & wood to decorate, sew, weave, build and landscape. We’ll make scarecrows, hobbit houses, a bug hotel, pendant flags and nature art. Get ready to be muddy and creative in your beautiful living laboratory!

About the Instructor:
Deborah McArthur has been teaching outdoor and environmental education for over 20 years. She holds a Bachelor degree in Biology, Masters in Environmental Studies and is credentialed in science education. Deborah has coordinated education programs in science centers, museums, and camps and designed curricula, exhibits, and interpretive panels. She is a  lifelong homecrafter (cooking, knitting, weaving, sewing, painting, building) and an avid gardener. Deborah has taught Life Lab at outdoor science school, camps and at HVS. Her favorite place to teach is outdoors, getting feet muddy with multi-sensory, hands-on and collaborative activities. Mother of one Happy Valley kid (and one alumna), Deborah is excited to cultivate the student’s connection to this important part of their school.

Sports Alive (Grades 1-6)
Come learn the art of being a good sport.  Learn new games and a new version of some of your old favorites.  Lion King Bill Trimpi is known for integrating sports and game play with music, drumming, stories and adventures.  He might even throw in a bit of puppetry!  Games will be easy, fun and for all ages and all levels of players.  Dress to move and get ready to have some fun.

About the Instructor:
Bill has played soccer for over 50 years, including collegiate and semi-professional in the 1970s. Bill got his start at Santa Cruz Soccer Camp in the late 1980s, and became a co-owner in the late 90s. During the year, Bill is a special guest teacher for Pajaro Valley Unified School District, an instructor for Fitness for Life in Extended Learning for PVUSD, a consultant for the UCSC Master Teacher program, and a substitute teacher throughout the county. In 2000, he received the Youth Mentor Award for Santa Cruz County.

Dance (Grades 1-3)
This class will combine the fundamentals of dance with creative movement to give students a well-rounded dance experience. We will learn basic technique, play movement based games, explore choreography, and simply delight in the sheer joy that dancing with others brings us!

About the Instructor:
Meredith Cabezas is a dance teacher at Motion Pacific. She discovered her passion for dance at age 10 after a dance company performed at her elementary school. For the last 15 years, she has fallen deeply in love with the art form and has taken every opportunity to immerse herself in it. Her dance background emphasizes ballet, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary. Meredith believes that the creativity, discipline, and confidence she has learned from dance translate into every other aspect of her life. For this reason, she is excited to share her love of dance with others by helping them to have the same positive experience!

Drawn 2 Art (Grades 1-3)
Whether you are an experienced artist or you are just starting out - Drawn2Art is the Art Class for you!  The teacher will help your student simplify each drawing by breaking down each drawing into four easy steps.  Each student will be choosing from a wide array of curriculum from drawing their favorite cartoon characters, animals they love, and pictures from nature.  The students will have tons of fun coloring their artwork.  They will learn different techniques working from different media, such as markers, colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolor crayons/pencils, and more.  Art is a skill, just like learning to ride a bike, it just takes practice!

About the Instructor:
Hello, my name is Petra Schultz and I am a local Santa Cruz Artist.  My favorite things to draw are The Figure and Portraiture; my favorite mediums to work in are Chalk Pastels and Oil Painting.  I spend all my time either creating art, reading, spending time at the river or at the beach.  I love spending time with my friends and family.  I have my Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Art.

Set Design (Grades 4-6)
Come and help design and create a fabulous set for the 6th grade play!

 About the Instructor:

WEST Performing Arts will be leading the set design program for the spring session.  The mission of WEST Performing Arts is to provide youth and families a creative outlet and training ground that cultivates the imaginative process.  We provide educational experiences in literature, performing, expressive and creative arts through classes and productions. We give young artists and audiences the invaluable knowledge that their imaginations have had a positive and profound impact on their world.  All of our classes, training programs and productions are process-driven, believing that the creative journey is what matters. Using integrated art forms as our tools, we build confidence, communication and community.

Yearbook (Grade 6; students in Grade 5 will be enrolled if space permits)
Interested in taking pictures of your classmates and fun events held at school?  Enjoy the art of photography and graphic design?  Then joining the yearbook club is for you! Help us make a fun-filled yearbook that is full of student candids, photos from events at school and from field trips. Help us design the yearbook cover, compose yearbook pages and create a yearbook that will be treasured for a lifetime. You will learn some basic photography skills so you understand the difference between a snapshot and a photograph. We hope to create a collaborative experience with the kids in yearbook and want to hear your ideas about how you want to create this keepsake.

 About the Instructors:
Tiffany Willet and Carly Perlman
Carly and Tiffany both have children attending Happy Valley School.  We have a love for taking photographs, making photo books, and inspiring kids to use their creativity in all sorts of ways. We are both excited to teach this class where we will share our passion for photography, design and artistic expression.
